Chocolate Drops

These are easy and delicious. You may want to make a double batch.

  • 1-3/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 squares (2 ounces) unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 1-1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a cookie sheet.
  2. Sift together the flour, soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon.
  3. With an electric mixer at high speed, cream together the shortening and brown sugar. Beat in the egg, melted chocolate and vanilla until mixture is light and fluffy.
  4. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk, blending well. Stir in the pecans.
  5. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes.
  6. Makes about 2-1/2 dozen cookies.
